Epic Sunrise Fail

I love watching the sunrise. It’s a beautiful way to start the day and energize the soul. Every one is so different depending on the clouds in the sky and whats in view of the horizon. A few of my favorite moments where in Tulum Mexico and in the Grand Canyon. I’ve been pretty lucky to see a few good ones so I thought I had a process down to predict a good sunrise.

When I went to Montezuma beach in Costa Rica, I thought I found the perfect spot to catch a good view. It was rainy season, so I checked the weather forecast the night before. There was a probability of overcast and rain, but it was a small chance.

I invited a few new hostel friends I just met to wake up early with me, walk a few minutes to the beach, and watch the sun rise.

Guest what? Epic sunrise viewing FAIL! The picture above is what we saw.

The big fail was that the compass on my watch wasn’t calibrated right. I couldn’t tell which direction the sun was going to peak from since it was cloudy. I thought the rays would break through. I even told my friends to look in the wrong direction! Then it started to drizzle. LOL It was worth a shot to wake up early.

We just walked back to the hostel and went back to sleep. I felt a little bad since they woke up early.

I can’t control the weather, but I can plan better before getting people excited about watching the sunrise.

Lesson learned. Double check forecast. Calibrate instruments. Don’t rely too much on technology.

It’s not a big deal because the sun will come out again tomorrow.

What’s your favorite spot to watch the sunrise from?

  1. I love watching the sunrise from the seashore. It’s more relaxing and more peaceful to watch.
