New Years Eve on the Vegas Strip

New Years Eve Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas strip is one of the best NYE celebrations in the world. What makes it awesome are the firework show above the casinos, open drinking on the street, and a massive sea of party goers who ring in the new year… Vegas style!

Since I’ve lived in Vegas for almost six years, I participated in the celebration both as a tourist and a local. Most Las Vegans avoid the strip on NYE after doing it once or twice, but the vibrant energy draws me back year after year to one of America’s best parties.

I think it’s actually better to celebrate on the street rather than inside a nightclub. It’s cheaper to walk around with drinks you bring than spending hundreds of dollars waiting in lines whether its getting into a club or ordering at the bar. Plus, the countdown is displayed on all the illuminated billboards and you’ll see one of the most intense fireworks displays lighting the sky above.

On NYE, the streets are closed off around 5 p.m. as the city gets ready and the giant party lasts until the everyone clears out after the fireworks are over. I’ve seen families with little kids to crazy drunk tourists cheering and screaming. Vendors sell blinky lights, hats, noise makers, and beads. There are a few bars that sell beer and mixed drinks on street level, but it’s best to bring your own booze. The area is fairly safe as Metro police are out in full force, but if big crowds aren’t your thing this party might not be for you.

If craziness, adventure, and partying is your cup of tea, you might want to put this on your bucket list of events to experience!

Here are six tips to survive the Vegas strip on NYE.

  • It’s best to book a hotel on the strip or two blocks nearby. There is a two night minimum stay during NYE.
  • Dress warm. It gets down to 30 degrees in Vegas during winter.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Bring drinks in a plastic container.
  • There are porta-potties on the street if you have to use the toilet. If you are not staying on property or near the strip, bring a collection of old hotel room keys if you want to use the toilet or warm up inside a casino. Borrow keys from someone you know who visits Vegas frequently. The casinos on the strip are fenced off and security only allows hotel guests with room keys inside. Flash the key to security when entering a casino barricade and walk in with confidence like you are a guest. This works for groups of 5 or less.
  • Have fun! It’s new years eve!

I love Vegas – didn’t even think about it for NYE but I bet there are so many things to do there at that time! Street party sounds fantastic. With the good weather and being able to drink outside, why not?
